What Happens in a Race
Exhibition Sailing
Before the actual race, each racer has an exhibition sailing session, practicing the intended jockeying and race start and demonstrating to spectators their boat/motor in good form by doing 2 laps at full speed. There are two types of Exhibition Sailing; Starting Exhibition and Exhibition Lap.
Starting Exhibition
In a Starting Exhibition, racers try out their intended jockeying and start maneuvers before the actual race.
Jockeying
◆Inside LaneThe inside lane is considered to be more advantageous because there are fewer rival boats on the inner side but the disadvantage is that the approach distance is short.
◆Outside Lane
The outside lane is considered disadvantageous because there are more boats on the inner side but the advantage is that the approach distance is longer.
Exhibition Lap
In an Exhibition Lap, after all boats have started in their Starting Exhibition, racers mainly demonstrate their turns and straight runs.
From Pit-out to Start
Pit-out is when the 6 racing boats sprint out of their pits all at once at the sound of a fanfare.
They start the warm-up where they jockey for position to gain access to the start lane that they think will allow them to win.
When the starting lane is decided, the boats begin their approach run to the starting line and the race begins when the boats pass the starting line within the designated time frame. In BOAT RACE, boats must pass the starting line when the hand of the Big Clock points between 12 and 1 o-clock. If the boat passes the starting line even 0.01 seconds sooner than 12, it is a flying start (F) and if the start line is crossed more than 1 second later, it is a late start (L). In both cases, the boat is disqualified from the race.
※Full refunds are made on bets on such disqualified boats.
Lap 1: Battle around Marker 1
The battle around Marker 1, which comes soon after the start of the race, is truly exciting to watch. It is also a key indicator of who may win the race.
Lap 1: Battle beyond Marker 2
In BOAT RACE, the boats inevitably are disadvantaged by the backwash of the boats in front of them but even after passing Marker 2 in Lap 1, there is no letup in the exciting contest right till the finish. Boats race against each other furiously to get into second or third positions, and sometimes the winning boat is overtaken.
